Prevention Always Better Than Cure

Especially when there’s no cure
Let’s face it, it’s highly likely that we’ll all get mildly ill from time to time. Sometimes, a relative few of us will get pretty ill and a few of this few will die. It’s natural. For those of us that have certain conditions which make it difficult to live the life that most of us enjoy, it’s vital that they get the help and support that they need.
Surely that was the reason for the establishment of the National Health and Social Services?

Entitlement
However, in recent decades I believe there has been a growing sense of entitlement about what these services should be doing for an increasingly larger number of us, allied to a lack of personal responsibility for our own physical, mental, emotional health and well being.
This has led to a growing reliance and trust in a medical system that we look to in order to cure all of our ailments, irrespective of how they have developed. And this medical system operates within a framework that has huge pharmaceutical business influence, leading me and maybe you as well to question the purity of the intention and actions of such a business and the system influenced by it.
But if we don’t follow our tendency towards this ‘herd instinct’, what else to follow, how else to stay well most of the time?
It’s pretty simple and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Or if they do, I think it’s important to have your sceptical hat on, maybe even your BS detector switched on, as you seek to find out what their motivation and intentions are.

The Important Ingredients
Here are what I believe are the important ingredients to staying well most of the time, which is largely achieved by having a strong immune system:
Drinking clean water
Breathing clean air
Eating food that has been grown and reared with care in soil that has been nourished slowly with organic matter
Growing and rearing as much of that as possible yourself
Developing a resilient and positive mental attitude
Developing and maintaining nurturing, nourishing, caring relationships with your family and friends
Finding ways to express your creativity, sometimes in exchange for money, sometimes for its sheer pleasure
Contributing to the well being of  your community

Time to Rethink?
It’s my perception that these ingredients don’t feature in most people’s lives. What makes me claim such a thing?
To focus on one statistic, what are the latest figures for the number of anti-depressants prescribed annually in the UK? Last time I checked, it was over 70 million!

So using happiness or contentment as one measure of wellness, there seems to be an absence for those that are prescribed this cure.
What conditions need to be present to ensure happiness and contentment? A perception and belief that we are cared about by others, especially those that we care about; that who we are and what we do matters, that our lives have enough meaning and purpose. Enough that at the end of a day, month, year, life, we can reflect with satisfaction on the contribution we have made.
At the very unusual time, maybe one of our rethink opportunities can be to do with our health and well being?
